Chapter 12: On the Porch

Declan went down the hall ahead of me and opened the front door.

Gavin stood on the porch in yesterday's shirt with his hair on end and the grey light on his face.

He hadn't shaved in two days.

"Where is it?" he said to me, past Declan's shoulder. "The tablet. I need it back."

"Why?"

"Because Bianca's counts crashed last night. They've admitted her to Cedars. The doctors say the cord blood has to be ready by Friday, and I need the kit schedule, and it's on that tablet."

His voice broke on the last word.

I looked at him.

For two years I had loved that voice.

"Come in," I said. "Sit down."

Declan didn't move.

"Camille."

"It's all right."

I went to the kitchen table and took the printed pages from the folder Declan had left there at dawn.

The state lab report, the insurance count, the medical board's billing records, the birth certificate.

I laid them on the porch rail in front of Gavin one at a time.

"Read."

"I don't have time for this."

"You have the time it takes me to say it."

He took the first page.

I watched him read the numbers.

His eyes moved down the column, and stopped, and went back to the top.

"This is wrong," he said.

"Hemoglobin fourteen. White count seven. It's from last February."

"It's a different patient."

"It has her date of birth."

He read the second page.
