Chapter 14: Thirty Percent

The Ellery Capital boardroom was on the thirty-first floor, with a glass wall and the whole of downtown behind it.

I stood in the doorway in a coat that no longer closed over my belly, and eleven people stopped talking.

"Mrs. Ellery," said the woman at the head of the table. "This is a closed meeting."

"I'm Camille Sutherland," I said. "And I'm not here to speak."

Gavin's mother sat at the far end in pearls.

She looked at my belly first, as she had at every dinner for two years, and then at Declan.

"You have no business here," she said to him. "You have not been in this room since the funeral."

"I have thirty percent of this room."

"Which you have never used."

"No," Declan said. "I haven't."

He pulled out a chair for me at the wall, away from the table, and sat in the empty seat that had been his father's.

The chair creaked.

Nobody had taken it in four years.

Gavin was already there, three seats down, in the shirt from the porch.

He did not look at me.

The woman at the head of the table cleared her throat.

"The first item is a motion from the chair," she said. "To repurchase the shares held by Dr. Maddox at the valuation set out in the packet, in the interest of stability."

"Stability," Declan said.

"The company is under strain."

"It is. Item two on my agenda is why."

He took a folder from his jacket and set it down in front of him.

"Ellery Capital Medical Holdings," he said. "Fourteen months of rent on a suite in Century City where no doctor has ever worked. Sixty-one thousand dollars a month to a concierge practice that doesn't exist. Eleven wires to the Pacific Cord Registry foundation, on the signature of the chief executive, to secure a collection kit for a patient with no match workup."
