Chapter 15: The Kitchen in Pasadena

I went alone, and Declan let me.

He parked at the curb of my father's street and turned off the engine.

"I'll be here," he said. "If you're not out in thirty minutes, I'm coming in."

"Forty."

"Thirty-five."

I kissed him once, hard, and got out.

The house looked the way it always had, with the lemon tree and the white shutters and the porch swing I'd been told not to sit on.

The front door was unlocked.

Bianca was in the kitchen, at the island where I'd done my homework, eating a bowl of cereal.

She wore jeans and a sweatshirt.

There was no wheelchair anywhere.

"Shut the door," she said. "Dad's at his lawyer. He thinks I'm upstairs."

I shut it and stayed against it.

"You want some?" She held up the box. "It's the kind you used to like."

"No."

"Suit yourself." She ate another spoonful. "I thought I'd be better at this."

"At what?"

"Being caught." She shrugged. "I always figured I'd cry. It's weird. I just feel hungry."

I watched her chew.

She looked like my sister, the way she had when we were girls, and I hated how much I still recognized her.

"Tell me," I said.

"You'll hate it."

"I already do."

She put down the spoon.

"I was fifteen when I found the adoption papers in Dad's desk," she said. "Except they weren't adoption papers. They were a birth certificate with his name on it and a hospital in Sacramento. I asked him who my mother was."

"And?"

"He cried. He'd never cried in front of me. He said, 'I can't make this public, Bianca. It would destroy your mother.' He meant yours." She said the next part quietly. "And I thought, so I'm a secret. And then I got sick for the first time, a real flu, and for two weeks he didn't leave my room."
