Chapter 16: Declan's POV: What He Owes

Declan's POV

Camille had said she would interrupt Bianca's speech on Saturday, and I had lain awake over how.

Interrupting a liar takes proof, and the only man who might hand me proof was Gavin.

He had taken a room at a hotel in Santa Monica, on a high floor, with the curtains open on the water.

I didn't tell Camille I was going.

I told her I was getting groceries, and she gave me a look that said she knew better and let me go.

The door opened before I finished knocking.

He had clearly not slept, and he had clearly not drunk, and I couldn't decide which was worse.

"You came to gloat," he said.

"I came to tell you something I should have told you at the funeral."

He stood back and let me in.

The room smelled of coffee and unopened mail.

I sat on the arm of the couch, and he stayed standing at the window.

"Dad called me in the last week," I said. "Alone, at night, when you were asleep in the chair. He had about an hour of clear head left."

"I was there."

"You were asleep."

His shoulders moved.

"He told me you would take whatever you wanted," I said. "He said you'd never been told no by anyone you loved, and that he was the one who'd done it. He asked me to stay and be the person who told you no."

Gavin turned from the glass.

"He asked you."

"He asked me to stay in the company and watch you. I said yes in that room." I looked at my hands. "I was gone ten days after the funeral."

"Why?"

"Because I couldn't stand to be in the building. Because your mother was already choosing the funeral menus. Because I told myself you were a grown man, and I was a surgeon, and my job was to be useful where somebody was bleeding." I made myself look at him. "I left you alone with it, Gav. I left you to be told yes by everyone for four years, and then I stood at your wedding and watched your face change when she walked in, and I left again."
