Chapter 17: Frank's Birthday
The contractions stopped at two in the morning, after a bag of fluids and a shot to calm the muscle.
"False labor," the obstetrician said at dawn, reading the monitor. "It happens when the body is under a great deal of stress. She's thirty-three weeks. If it starts again and comes regularly, you come straight back."
"She's staying in bed," Declan said.
"She's staying in bed with her feet up," the doctor agreed, and looked at me. "Mrs. Ellery?"
"Sutherland."
"Ms. Sutherland. Are you listening?"
"Yes."
I was not.
I was looking at the folder on the chair, with Frank's signature on the witness page.
On Saturday at seven I walked into my father's house on Declan's arm in a green dress that had cost him a morning of arguing with a seamstress.
He had lost the argument about the party.
"I'll be in the chair at the back the whole time," I'd said. "I'll be so boring."
"You won't."
"I won't," I'd admitted.
My father's house was full.
Candles lined the walk, and a string quartet played in the garden, and a hundred and fifty people stood about with glasses in the dusk.
The foundation board had come, and the Blood Fund donors, and my father's old partners, all in good coats.
Over the fireplace hung a banner I'd never seen: Bianca's Year of Hope.
Bianca stood by the piano in a white dress with her hair in a loose braid.
She looked radiant.
She saw me in the doorway, and for one second the smile stayed, and her eyes went flat.
"Cam," she called, loud enough for the nearest circle. "You came. Everyone, my sister. She's been through so much."
A wave of sympathy rolled toward me, and I felt every face turn.
My father crossed the room with his drink.
"You are not welcome," he said low.
