Chapter 19: June

She came at ten to four in the morning, on the third push after the doctor said it was time.

Before that there were two hours I will never describe properly.

The room filled with people in blue.

A small warm table stood ready under a lamp, and a neonatal nurse set out tiny things on it in a row.

Declan stood at my right shoulder with his sleeves rolled to the elbow and his hand in mine.

"You don't have to be in here," I told him, between one wave and the next.

"I know."

"You're not a father."

"No," he said. "I'm not. I'm a friend of the mother, and she asked for me, and I'm not going anywhere."

I had asked for him.

I had said it in the hall, without thinking, and the obstetrician had only nodded.

The pain came in long waves, one on top of the next, and I swore at everyone, including a nurse who held my knee.

"Good," said the nurse. "Swear at me. I've heard worse."

"I want to go home."

"You're doing it, Camille. You're nearly there."

"I'm not," I said. "She's too early. She's thirty-three weeks."

"She's thirty-three weeks and four days," the obstetrician said, from between my knees, "and she's turned the right way and she's well and she's coming. Give me one more."

I looked at Declan.

His face was wet.

He was a trauma surgeon, and he had seen men die on stretchers, and he was crying openly in my delivery room.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey."

"You're a mess."

"You're magnificent," he said hoarsely. "Camille. Push."

I pushed.

A shout came out of me that I didn't know I had, and something enormous gave all at once.

Then the room went silent, and a thin, furious cry rose in the quiet.
