Chapter 20: The Last Meeting
They let me out of bed on the second day, and I went down the hall in a wheelchair with June asleep in the crook of my arm.
The maternity floor had a sitting room at the end, with a window, a fish tank and a view of the parking lot.
Gavin sat in it, as he had for two days.
He wore the same shirt.
He hadn't tried to come to my door once.
Two people in plain jackets stood by the elevator talking to the charge nurse, a man and a woman, with badges clipped to their belts.
Declan walked at my shoulder.
"State medical board," he murmured. "And an investigator from the insurance side. They've been in Frank's files since the party."
"Who told them she'd come?"
"I did," Gavin said from the sitting room, without turning.

He had heard us, and he hadn't moved his eyes from the fish.
"She called me at six this morning. She said she wanted to see the baby before she goes away, and she'd bring a gift." His voice was dull. "I told the investigators where I'd be. That's all I did."
The elevator opened.
Bianca came out in a long coat and a hat pulled low, carrying a pink gift bag, and she walked straight, with her head up, the way she had walked in the kitchen when nobody was watching.
She saw Gavin first.
Her whole face changed.
It softened and melted and filled with tears, all in a breath, and I thought, there it is, there's the girl I grew up with.
"Gavin," she said. "Baby. I've been so scared."
He turned from the fish tank at last.
"Where were you on October eleventh?"
She stopped.
"What?"
"The eleventh. You were in Cabo in a yellow bikini. I have the picture. You had a transfusion that day, you told me." He looked at her. "Where were you?"
