Chapter 4: The Lawyer

By noon I was sitting in a lawyer's office in Ventura with a paper cup of water and no lunch.

The lawyer was a woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up into grey hair.

Declan had called her from the car, and she had cleared her calendar in nine minutes.

"Start at the beginning," she said. "Leave out nothing and don't decorate it."

I told her about the study door, the recording, the strawberries and the clinic folder.

I played her the voice memo from my phone.

Gavin's voice filled the room.

Camille only has to get through the delivery.

She listened with her eyes shut.

When it ended she opened them and looked at Declan.

"Where did you get her?"

"The gate of her husband's driveway."

"Good place to find a witness." She turned back to me. "Mrs. Ellery, you have a recording of your husband planning a medical procedure on your child without your consent, and a form you signed under false pretenses. That's a strong start."

"What do I do?"

"We file for an emergency protective order tonight. It bars the clinic from acting on that consent and bars him from deciding anything about your care. The court will give us a hearing within days."

"And the money?"

"We'll ask for support in the same filing." She looked at Declan. "Somebody has to pay my retainer in the meantime."

"I'll pay it," Declan said.
