Chapter 5: Her Own Recording

The hearing was on Friday, in a small courtroom in Ventura with a flag and a broken clock.

Gavin was already at the other table when we came in.

He wore a navy suit and no tie, and he had shaved.

He looked like a husband who hadn't slept for worry.

He turned and met my eyes, and the face he gave me was soft and sad.

My lawyer touched my elbow.

"Don't react to him. Look at the judge."

Declan sat behind me in the first row, close enough that I could feel him there.

Gavin's lawyer stood first.

He was young and polished, with a leather folder, and he spoke about me in the voice people use for a sick pet.

"Your Honor, Mrs. Ellery left her husband's home at night, thirty weeks pregnant, with a man she has known for two days. She has stopped taking her husband's calls. She has refused medical advice from her family's own doctors."

"The family's doctors," the judge said.

"Her sister's clinic team, Your Honor. And we have reason to believe this is a pattern."

He opened the folder.

"Exhibit C. A voicemail Mrs. Ellery left her husband on the night of March ninth."

He pressed a button.

My own voice came out of a speaker.

It was thin and rough, and it was three in the morning.

"Gavin, where are you? It's three and you're not home. I keep thinking something is wrong with me. I keep thinking you don't want me here. Please, please just call."

I had left it eight months ago, after a night he stayed out and told me he had been with investors.

I had been crying, and he had saved it.

The courtroom was very quiet.

The lawyer clicked it off and spoke gently.
