Chapter 6: Declan's POV: Not Our Patient

Declan's POV

I left Camille asleep in my spare room with the lock turned on the inside.

That was her choice, and I had made sure she knew it was.

Then I got in the car and drove to Century City at seven in the morning.

The clinic folder she had shown the lawyer listed a treating lab for Bianca Sutherland: Meridian Hematology, suite 410.

A match report needs a lab, and a lab leaves a trail.

I have spent fifteen years reading trails in the dark, in the backs of ambulances, from the shape of a wound to the thing that made it.

This was the same work.

The lobby directory had no Meridian Hematology.

I rode to the fourth floor anyway and found a short corridor and four numbered doors.

The one marked 410 was locked.

The glass beside it was frosted, with no name and no logo.

I knocked.

Nobody came.

A woman in a grey suit stepped out of the suite next door, pulling a lanyard over her head.

"Are you looking for someone?"

"Meridian Hematology."

"I've never heard of it." She glanced at the door. "That one's been empty since I moved in."

"How long ago?"

"Fourteen months."

Fourteen months.

I thanked her and walked back to the elevator, and while I waited my mind went where I had told it not to.

It went to a church in Montecito, two years ago.

I had stood at the back of the nave in a suit I hated, because my father's lawyers had asked me to come and be seen.
