Chapter 7: The Blood Fund Gala

Camille's POV

The Blood Fund gala was held in a Beverly Hills ballroom with three hundred chairs and a banner two stories tall.

HELP BIANCA LIVE.

Her face was on it, smiling, with a soft white scarf over her hair.

I stood in the doorway in a black maternity dress Declan's neighbor had lent me and looked at the banner for a long time.

"We can go back to the car," Declan said.

"No."

"You don't owe anybody a speech."

"I know," I said. "I owe myself one."

He stopped arguing and gave me his arm.

We found two seats at the back.

Gavin was at the front table in a dark suit, with his mother's old friends on either side of him.

He didn't see us.

A woman in pearls took the stage and spoke about courage, and the room applauded, and a video played.

In the video my sister sat in a hospital bed, thin and radiant, thanking the donors.

I looked for the hospital's name on the wall behind her.

There wasn't one.

Then Bianca herself came out in a white dress, on Gavin's arm, walking slowly with a cane.

The applause was long.

She waited for it to end, and her voice shook as she began.

"Every day is a gift. Every day I'm here is a gift from you."

I stood up.

It took effort, with the baby low and heavy, and Declan rose with me.
