Chapter 8: Disowned on Camera

By morning, a woman in the crowd had posted the whole scene online.

The caption said, Pregnant sister heckles dying girl's charity gala.

Nine million people had watched it by breakfast.

I read the comments standing at Declan's kitchen counter in his shirt, because mine no longer fit across the middle.

Monster.

I hope her baby is born sick.

Imagine denying your own sister a cure.

The hundredth comment was from an account with a stock photo of a dog.

Somebody should rip that baby out of her.

I put the phone face down on the counter.

My hands were steady, and my stomach was not.

"You shouldn't read them," Declan said from the stove.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

"Because I need to know what Dad is going to say."

I found out at nine.

My father's face appeared on a morning show on the television above the fridge, in a blue blazer, in a soft-lit set.

"I have two daughters," Frank Sutherland said, to a host with a sympathetic frown. "I have always had two. But one of them stood up in front of three hundred people and tried to deny her sister her life."

His voice caught.

It was a good catch.

"I don't know that girl anymore. As of today she is no longer part of this family, and she has no claim on anything that belongs to it."

The host reached across and squeezed his hand.

I stood there with a spatula Declan had given me, a spatula I didn't remember taking.

I had thought I'd cry.

What came was a flat, clean feeling, a door closing somewhere I had stopped knocking on.

"He's wrong," Declan said.
