Chapter 9: The Tablet

The nurse called back at ten that night and talked for four minutes without stopping.

"I've worked at the registry six years," she said. "I've never seen a directed donation without a match workup. They told me to open a file for Bianca Sutherland and to leave the lab section blank. Then Mr. Ellery's assistant called this morning and told us to keep the collection kit ready for the thirty-fourth week anyway."

"Even with the court order?"

"The order is in the file. Nobody has read it."

She hung up before I could thank her.

The next afternoon I asked Declan to drive me to Malibu.

I wanted my mother's recipe box, which was still in the kitchen cabinet.

I also wanted to see what Gavin had done to my nursery.

The house stood in the late sun with every window gold.

His car was in the garage.

"He's home," Declan said. "I'll come in."

"I'd rather you didn't."

"I'm coming in."

I let him.

Gavin was in the living room with the glass doors open on the sea, a drink in his hand and his tie loose.

He looked up, and for a second I saw how tired he was.

"Camille."

"I came for my mother's recipe box."

"It's in the cabinet over the stove. Where you left it." He put the drink down. "Declan. Of course."

"Gavin."

I went up the stairs alone.

The nursery was the second door on the left.

I had painted the walls myself, a soft yellow, on a Saturday when he was out.

The yellow was gone.

The walls were white, a clean clinical white, and the crib had been replaced by a hospital recliner with an IV pole beside it.

On a steel cart stood a small cooler marked Pacific Cord Registry.

A name card was taped to the door in neat blue handwriting.

B. SUTHERLAND, RECOVERY SUITE.

I stood and looked at it until my knees began to hurt.
