Chapter 23: Forty-One Roots
When he came back to his floor after the Grand Market, the stone had two new lines on it.
[Level 6. Lots per Market: five.]
[No new seed.]
Under them, in the hollow in its side, the brass coins lay heaped over the lip.
He thought the word Shop, and it told him what it had told him at New Year.
[Next seed opens at Level 9.]
So Level 6 bought him two more lots a Saturday and nothing to put in them that he didn't already grow.
He sat down in the frosted grass beside the stone and counted what he did have.
There were fifty ginseng seeds left on the drying stone by the stove.
The ash trough by the door was a hand deep, after two months of fires.
Twelve scoops of it had gone into the roots Yook squeezed to pulp in front of the whole Market.
Forty-one Prime roots would scrape the trough bare.
He had kept seed back all winter for the crop he hadn't thought of yet, and he kept the ash back the same way.
So he grew them Fine.
He planted them on Thursday at dusk under the mats, from saved seed, with stream water, and no ash at all.
At dawn he lifted one and thought the word.
[Tower ginseng. Quality: Fine.]
[Growth: dusk to dawn. Keeps: 14 days.]
[Eaten: wakes a faded or broken skill, whole, within minutes.]
Minutes would do.
Nobody on that bench had waited less than a year.
He packed forty-one roots into the cane box he had woven again, and nine seeds stayed on the drying stone.
A week later the forty-one sat together on the old Hanbat bench with nobody in the middle of it.
They still wore the black jackets with the wheat-ear crest, because they had no others.
