Chapter 24: The Iron Pot
Bom took the red string out of her hair and put it in his jacket pocket.
"One hour," she said.
"You said that the first time."
"I'm saying it again so you can tell me no."
He crossed the grass to her.
She didn't wait for him to get there.
She caught the collar of his shirt in both hands and kissed him hard, and walked him backward toward the house while she did it.
His heel caught the doorstep, and they went through the door together and into the wall beside it.
The stove was lit.
The room was warm and smelled of woodsmoke and radish soup, and the floor slabs were warm under their boots.
She pushed his jacket off her own shoulders and let it drop on the floor.
"I wore it all week," she said against his mouth. "In the Cheongju guild house, to bed."
"Your grandmother saw it at breakfast on Tuesday and didn't say a word."
He knew that silence, and he knew what it cost Grandma to keep it.
"That's worse than if she had," he said.
"I know," Bom said.
He laughed, and she bit his lip to stop him.
He got his hands under her sweater and up her back.
Her skin was cold from the Market, and it warmed under his palms while he held them there.
She shivered and pressed closer.
"Take it off," she said.
He did.
She looked at him in the firelight for a long moment, at the sun line on his arms and the pale skin above it.
Then she put her mouth on his shoulder, and his chest, and he forgot what he had been about to say.
He pulled her sweater over her head.
The gray line ran up the inside of her left arm from wrist to elbow.
He kissed it, all the way along.
She made a sound he had never heard from her, low in her throat, and her fingers closed in his hair.
