Chapter 25: Rice
The rice had come up gold in the dark again, and this time it stood to Gyu-ho's hip.
Five days ago he had left six heads of the first rice standing one night past ripe.
He had dried the grain on the warm top of the stove for three days, turning it whenever he fed the fire.
Last night at dusk he had worked a double handful of stove ash into the mud before he pushed the grain in.
He thought the word Look, and the window opened over the heads.
[Tower rice. Quality: Prime.]
[Growth: dusk to dawn. Keeps: never spoils.]
[Eaten: wakes a second skill before the bowl is empty.]
[Seed: ready one night past ripe. Dry three days.]
The bowl already sitting in his stone was the Good one, from the first strip, and Good rice took an hour.
A term was spoken once, and he had learned in November not to argue with the Tower about words.
He stood up with his knees cracking and looked back along the stream.
In October this had been one row of peppers and a dead hound.
Now the black soil ran in rows for three hundred steps along both banks, and the stream ran into every one of them.
Grandma's peppers stood along the first channel, red to the tops.
The tomato vines grew on cane frames thatched with grass against the frost.
Beyond them were the radishes, the perilla with its big rough leaves, and Bom's ginseng row with a pebble beside every plant.
The rice ran down the middle of it all, where the stream spread out into a shallow, wet flat.
The first night's planting had frozen in the still water at the shallow end, so he had cut a channel to keep it moving.
The ash was the problem he couldn't dig his way out of.
Prime needed it, and the only ash on this floor came out of his stove, a scoop a night from cane and dry grass.
