Chapter 11: What He Chose
At seven the next morning he was outside the shop before I'd lifted the shutter.
He was in yesterday's shirt.
He hadn't shaved, and he hadn't slept.
He'd brought two coffees from the bakery, the way he used to on my counter days.
I lifted the shutter and let him in, because the barber was already watching.
He set one coffee in front of me and kept his hands around the other.
"She's out of the apartment by tonight," he said.
I put my coffee down.
"I'll have the lawyer stop the payments. I'll have the locks changed while she's at her mother's. I'll have her things boxed and sent wherever she wants them."
"No."
He went on.
"If she wants to have the baby somewhere quiet, I'll pay for it. Arizona. A nice place, a nurse, a doctor. She goes this week, and she doesn't come back to Brooklyn."
He said it in the calm voice.
The voice I'd heard through a door once, giving orders about me.
"And who tells everyone why?" I asked.
"Nobody tells anybody anything. That's the point."
"That's the whole point, isn't it?"
He stopped.
"Cesare, listen to yourself. You're doing it again."
"Doing what?"
"Managing it. In the back room. Money, a plane, a nurse, and it all goes away."
"It should go away."
"There's a baby," I said. "Whatever she did, there's a baby, and it didn't do anything. You don't get to ship it to Arizona because it embarrasses you."
His hands tightened on the cup.
"And I don't want it to go away," I said. "Everybody in Bensonhurst thinks my sister is carrying the Don's child. My mother thinks it. Your mother thinks it."
