Chapter 12: The Police
I turned off the machine.
The old man waiting for his key looked at the cruiser, then at me.
"You want me to call somebody, Lili?" he asked.
I knew who he meant by somebody.
"No," I said. "Sit down. Your key's almost done."
The bell rang, and the two officers came in.
The first was a young man with a fresh haircut and a notebook.
The second was a woman with her hair in a tight bun.
I'd last seen her at two in the morning in a sweatshirt, crying over her own deadbolt.
Number four.
She saw me and stopped dead in the doorway.
My mother pushed in behind them.
"That's her," she said again. "Liliana Bruno. She was parked outside my daughter's building today. Watching her. My daughter is pregnant. She's terrified."
The young officer opened his notebook.
"Ma'am," he said to me, "were you outside an address on Shore Road this afternoon?"
"Yes."
My mother made a satisfied noise.
"Why?"
"It's a public street," I said.
Connie, behind the register, choked on her own spit.
The young officer frowned.
"Your mother says you've been harassing your sister since your separation. She says you changed the locks on her at a property in Dyker Heights."
"That's true," I said. "I changed every lock in that house. I'm the locksmith. It's my job."
"She also says you broke into this shop."
"I picked a padlock on my own shop. With my own picks. I own half the building."
The young officer wrote that down slowly.
He looked a little lost.
The bell rang again.
The woman from number one came in with her toddler on her hip and a foil tray.
"Lili, I made ziti, I didn't know what you..."
She saw the police and stopped.
Behind her came number six, holding another cake.
Behind her came a woman I didn't know, maybe fifty, in a coat over her nightgown, clutching her purse.
