Chapter 21: The Bar

The prosecutor didn't answer him in the hallway.

She took a business card out of her jacket and held it out, between two fingers, without stepping closer.

"Have your next lawyer call me," she said.

Stewart took it.

Then she looked past him at me, and gave me one small nod.

Three weeks later, I drove to Hartford for Alicia's disciplinary hearing.

It was in a plain hearing room on the fourth floor of a state building.

There was no flag and no bench.

A panel of three lawyers sat behind a long table, two men and a woman, with a court reporter at the end.

Alicia sat at a smaller table with her own lawyer.

She was out on nothing. Nobody had charged her yet.

The prosecutor was waiting for Stewart's statement to be checked line by line.

Alicia wore navy today, not camel. No red lipstick. Her hair was pulled back plain.

She'd always known what to wear.

Her lawyer argued for an hour.

The video from the safe was out of context.

The envelope held a retainer for a legitimate psychiatric consultation.

Ms. Dunford had been deceived by a married man who used her.
