Chapter 22: Eleven Names
On the third of March it snowed in Stamford.
The criminal courthouse was a block from the family court, taller and colder, with metal detectors at the door.
We came in a line.
Eleven women, and me, and the orderly with a clipboard, and Matthew at the back holding everyone's coats.
The guards at the metal detectors watched us go through one by one.
One of them asked if we were a tour.
"Witnesses," said the professor's wife. "All of us."
The psychiatrist sat at the defense table in a gray suit.
He didn't turn around when we filed into the second and third rows.
The jury did.
Twelve faces, looking at eleven women.
The prosecutor called them in the order the names were scratched, from the newest to the oldest.
The girl went first.
She wore a blazer my grandmother had bought her and held her hands tight in her lap.
"My husband paid him fifty thousand dollars," she said. "I heard them on the phone. I wrote it under the bed so the next one would know."
"What did you write?"
"'He paid him.'"
