Chapter 19: The Ledger
Dale's smile came apart in the middle, and he tried to hold the two halves together.
"Dad, it's a donor list. Nobody wants to hear a donor list on Christmas Eve."
"It is the Treasurer's Report," the pastor said, from the lectern beside the choir. "The bylaws say it's read aloud every year."
"Frank read it every year until 2018," someone called from the back.
A man near the aisle added, "I miss that part."
The pastor stepped down and took the program from the nearest pew.
He turned it over.
The back page was a printed table in small type, with a title across the top.
"Basket Fund, Annual Statement," the pastor read.
"Balance handed to the new treasurer, January 2019: sixty-four thousand two hundred dollars."
The church was so quiet I could hear the candle wax.
"That figure has been printed here every year," the pastor said. "I believe the printer simply copied it."
