Chapter 20: Brightpath

"I left with almost nothing," Caleb said. "I slept in a library in California."

"I wrote delivery software in a room with no heat."

"Then I started my own company, and then I started another."

He did not raise his voice.

He talked to the pews the way he talked to a boardroom, plainly, with his hands at his sides.

"Brightpath routes grocery trucks. If you've bought a package of chicken in the last six years, the truck that carried it probably followed my code."

"We're valued at four point four billion dollars."

"I own thirty-eight percent."

Nobody said a word.

Somebody's baby fussed in the back and was hushed.

Dale gave a harsh, high laugh.

"A billionaire," he said. "In that coat. Everybody hear that? He's a liar as well as a thief."

"I wore it so you'd see me once without the money," Caleb said. "I think that worked."

In the fifth pew, the candle seller had been tapping at her phone under her hymnal.

She held it up.
