I rolled the window up in Bradford's face.

Cormac pulled out of the ambulance spot without a word.

"Emergency custody," Cormac said at the first red light. "On what?"

"On me saying no to a voice nobody else heard."

"Okay." He drummed the wheel. "Where am I taking you?"

"My bakery. Tremont Street. There's a cot in the back office and a fridge full of butter."

"That's the whole plan?"

"It's two-thirds of a plan."

Clem's was a narrow shop with a striped awning and my name painted in gold on the glass.

I'd chosen the font. Bradford had signed the lease.

My key went halfway into the lock and stopped.

I tried again.

There was a sheet of white paper taped inside the door, facing out.

PROPERTY OF KINGSFORD HOLDINGS. NO ADMITTANCE.

Through the glass I could see my mixer under its cover, my rolling pins on the wall, the jar of sourdough starter I'd kept alive for four years.

It was sitting on the counter with the lid off.

Nobody had fed it.

"I'm going to cry about the starter," I said. "Not about anything else. Just the starter."

"That's allowed."

Margo started screaming in the truck.

I needed diapers and the pain pills the hospital had prescribed.

At the pharmacy on the corner, my card declined.

So did the other one.

Cormac paid for everything and didn't say a word about it.

Back in the truck he sat with both hands on the wheel.

"There's an apartment over the firehouse," he said. "The old captain's. He retired to Florida two years ago and nobody's used it since. It's got a bed, a bathroom and a radiator that bangs like it's mad at you."

"I can't live in a firehouse."
