Chapter 5: Sisters
The whole kitchen had gone silent behind me.
Six firefighters, a roast chicken and my best friend of six years in the doorway.
"You walked out of the hospital a day after giving birth," I said. "To come here."
"So did you." Valerie's voice went small, the way it did when she wanted the last slice of something. "Can I sit down? I'm so sore, Clem."
Every part of me that had spent six years taking care of her stood up.
I hated that.
"Sit," I said.
She sat at the end of the long table, right where the probie had been eating.
The crew didn't leave.
The lieutenant just leaned back against the counter and folded his arms.
Valerie unbuckled the carrier and turned her son so I could see his face.
Dark hair. Bradford's chin. Seven minutes younger than my daughter.
"He looks like her," Valerie said. "Don't you think? Around the mouth."
He did.
"What do you want, Val?"
"I want to fix this." Her big blue eyes filled. "I know you're angry."
"Angry," I said.
"Okay, I know you're more than angry. But think about it. Really think about it." She leaned in. "They're brother and sister. They're going to want each other. We could raise them together in the house, both of them, as siblings. You and me. Like we always said."
"We said we'd share an apartment someday."
"The house is bigger than an apartment."
Somebody behind me made a sound.
I think it was the big guy.
"You'd keep your room," Valerie went on. "Your allowance. Margo would be the heir, and he'd be her brother, and nobody would ever have to know how. Bradford says Gran never has to find out."
"Gran was standing right there when I told her."
"Gran's seventy-nine," Valerie said gently. "She'll believe whatever's easiest."
