Chapter 11: Two Days

My lawyer called while I was still in the rec center parking lot.

"I told you to wait," she said.

"I know."

"It's done now. Listen carefully, because I'm going to tell you something I was asked not to tell you until Friday."

I sat in the car with Charlie asleep in the back and the engine off.

"On Wednesday the hotel's manager pulled thirty days of café footage for me. On a Friday three weeks back, your friend Taryn sat at that corner table with your husband and Simone Mercier."

"I heard the recording. I know she was working for him."

"She handed Simone her phone. Simone photographed the screen. Your husband gave her an envelope."

I closed my eyes.

"Wednesday?" I said. "He found this Wednesday?"

"Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Ostrow brought me the drive himself."

"And you told him not to tell me."

"I did."

"And he didn't."

"No, he didn't. Libby, that was my decision, not his."

"Thank you for telling me now," I said, and hung up.

I drove back to the Alder with both hands tight on the wheel.

Nate was in the lobby.

He was talking to a woman at the front desk, and he saw my face before I reached the revolving door.

He finished the sentence.

He said something quiet to the clerk, and he walked ahead of me down the corridor to his office and held the door.

I went in, and he shut it behind us.

"You saw it Wednesday," I said.

"Yes."

"You watched her take his money. And this Thursday morning you walked her up to my room and said it was a fire door."
