Chapter 12: The Trust

The trustee's office was on the nineteenth floor in downtown Denver, and it had a view of the mountains that I did not look at.

I sat in a leather chair with Charlie in the sling and my lawyer in the chair beside me.

The trustee was a small woman in her sixties with silver hair and a folder she did not open.

"Your mother set this up eight years before she died," she said. "It was meant to be a quiet thing. I'm sorry that it came out like this."

"I was told it was a college fund."

"It is a college fund, in part. It is also one million four hundred thousand dollars."

I heard the number, and I did not understand it.

My lawyer's pen stopped moving.

"For my son?"

"For your first child. Your mother left it in trust, so that nobody could spend it for him." The trustee turned a page and read. "Until he is eighteen, the trust pays a monthly sum to the adult who has custody of him, for his upbringing. At twenty-five he receives the balance."

"The adult who has custody."

"The guardian of the child. That was your mother's wording. She wanted the money to follow the person who raised him."

"Not me."

"The one who raised him," the trustee said gently. "She assumed that would be you."

My lawyer leaned forward.

"What's the monthly sum?"

"Five thousand dollars."

I did the arithmetic on my knees under the folder.

Five thousand a month, for eighteen years.

"My mother was a school librarian," I said.

"She was also careful. She sold her family's land in Wyoming, and she didn't tell anyone, because she knew what money does to a family."

"When did my husband first call you?" I asked.
