Chapter 7: The Waiting Room
On Monday morning I went back to work, because a bulldog named Biscuit had an appointment and nobody else knew where the ear drops were.
Lakeview Animal Clinic was full by nine.
A woman with a carrier of kittens, an old man with a beagle, two teenagers holding a hamster in a shoebox.
I sat behind the front desk in my purple scrubs and printed forms, and for forty minutes, I felt almost normal.
Then the bell over the door rang, and Kendall walked in.
She was dressed all in black, with sunglasses pushed up in her blond bob and a garment bag over her arm.
She stopped in the middle of the waiting room, looked around at the animals, and took a long breath.
"Hallie," she said. "We need to talk."
"We're open until six. Do you have a pet?"
"Don't do that."
"Then I can't help you."
The old man with the beagle turned his head to watch.
Kendall lowered her voice.
"Can we go somewhere private?"
