Chapter 8: Glass

His office was on the thirty-ninth floor of a glass tower on Randolph Street.

It was empty at that hour, every desk dark, every cleaner gone.

He walked me through it with his hand at the small of my back.

We passed a wall of framed buildings and stopped at a corner office.

The window ran from floor to ceiling.

The whole city lay below us in the dusk.

"Here," he said.

"Here what?"

"Scream."

I looked at him.

"Nobody can hear," he said. "The floor is soundproofed."

"I had it done after my divorce, and I've never used it for what it was meant for."

I took a breath.

I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.

Then it did.

I screamed at the lake and the river and the lit-up bridges, a long, ugly, wordless sound that scraped my throat raw.

I screamed until my knees shook.

I screamed for the invitations and the veil and the eight years, and when I ran out of air, I was laughing.

I turned around, wiping my eyes, and Benedict was leaning on the edge of his desk, watching me with his arms folded.

"Feel better?"

"A little."

"Good."

"Now sit down," I said.

His eyebrows rose.

"In your chair. Sit."

He looked at me for a long moment.

The corner of his mouth lifted.

"Am I being given an order, Miss Whincup?"

"For about ten minutes."

"I'll consider it."

"You'll do it," I said. "You wrote the terms, but I wrote the clause. I say out loud what I want."

He sat in his big leather chair and laid his hands on the armrests.

I unknotted his tie, slowly, and drew it out of his collar.
