Chapter 9: Sunday at the Club
The Smurthwaite Sunday dinner had been held at the University Club every month for thirty years.
Forty people sat at one long table under a chandelier.
There were aunts and uncles and cousins, and two men who owned half a block of the Loop.
I knew none of them.
I had been engaged to the family for a year, and I had met exactly four of them.
Benedict walked in with my hand on his arm.
I wore a black dress with a neckline that Skye had picked and a hem that she had refused to let me lengthen.
The room stopped.
Forks hung in the air.
An old woman at the head of the table lowered her glasses.
"Benedict," said an uncle. "Who's this?"
"Hallie Whincup," Benedict said. "She'll be sitting next to me."
Somebody dropped a spoon.
At the far end of the table sat Preston.
He wore a navy suit, and he looked rested and cruel, and beside him, in a green dress, was Kendall.
Her hand lay on his sleeve.
She looked at the tablecloth.
I took my seat.
Benedict pulled out my chair, pushed it in, and sat down at my left.
For three courses nobody said a word to me.
