Chapter 13: Not Mine
The Hall at noon was packed to the walls.
Forty wolves had filled it for the blood test, and now there were nearly two hundred, standing shoulder to shoulder under the low stone ceiling.
I had left Emil in the suite with two Northmen defensemen outside the door and Bram's promise that nobody would get past them.
Rhys walked in ahead of me.
He did not take the Alpha's chair on the dais.
He stood in front of it, and I stood a pace behind his left shoulder, where everyone could see me.
Pia was already there, in white cashmere, with one hand low on her stomach.
She looked rested and calm.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," she said, and her voice shook in exactly the right place. "I wanted you to hear it from me before the rumors started."
A woman near the front began to cry.
"I'm carrying the Alpha's child," Pia said. "Eight weeks. After six years of praying, I'm carrying his heir."
The Hall broke into noise.
Wolves clapped, and wolves cheered, and an old man by the pillar lifted both fists over his head.
Pia turned to Rhys with her eyes shining and her arms half open.
She was waiting for him to come to her.
Rhys didn't move.
"Not mine," he said.
He didn't shout it.
He said it into the noise, and the noise stopped one row at a time until the whole Hall had heard.
"I have not touched you in six years," Rhys said. "Not once, and everyone in this room has watched us live in separate wings. That child is not mine."
Pia's face crumpled.
It was beautiful work, and it was fast.
