Chapter 14: What the Old Alpha Saw

Rhys's father had not come to the Hall because he did not trust his own legs on the stairs.

I learned that from the housekeeper who let me into the Alpha house at two in the afternoon.

Rhys was still down in the Hall, shouting at elders, and I had not told him where I was going.

If he had been in the room, his father would have talked to his son.

I wanted him to talk to me.

The old Alpha sat in the study at the end of the hall, in the leather chair with the blanket over his knees.

He looked smaller in daylight.

"Sit down, girl," he said. "You've come to ask me to lift Hattie's exile."

"I came to ask you what you saw."

His eyes lifted to mine.

"The morning after the rite," I said. "Rhys told me you said you believed it was done. You didn't say what you saw. Something made you believe it."

He was quiet for a long time.

"There was a bowl of water on the dais that morning," he said at last. "I came down early to see it emptied. The oak chest was open, and Pia was kneeling at it, with the leather folder in her lap."

I stopped breathing.

"She had a pencil," said the old man. "She looked up and smiled at me. She said she was tidying the book for Rhys."

"And you said nothing."

"The claim had already held, Willa. There was a bite on her shoulder. What was I going to do, wake my son and tell him his Luna was filing papers?"
