Chapter 19: The Third Veil

I shook Hattie by both shoulders, and her head lolled.

"Hattie. Hattie, where is he?"

She opened one eye and said, "Tea," in a thick voice, and slid sideways into the armchair.

Rhys lifted the thermos to his nose and set it down.

"Valerian," he said. "A lot of it. She'll sleep an hour and wake furious."

"The guards."

He was already through the door.

The two Northmen defensemen who had stood outside the rink all morning were at the end of the hall, sitting with their backs against the wall, rubbing their foreheads.

"Cap," one said, groggy. "The Luna came by. She said you'd sent for the kid. She had your ring."

"My ring."

"The Alpha ring, Cap. The seal. We couldn't."

Rhys's face went flat.

The seal ring had been in his desk at the Alpha house for six years, because he had never put it on a hand that wasn't his.

Pia had lived in that house the whole time.

"Where?" I said.

"Down the back stair," said the other defenseman. "To the Hall."

I was running before he finished the sentence.

The back stair ran down from the training center to the stone corridor under the arena.

I took it two steps at a time, with Rhys beside me.

I did not feel my feet.

I heard Emil before I saw him.

His voice was thin and happy, echoing along the stone.
