Chapter 20: Which Veil
"Does the pony have a name?" Emil asked again.
Pia laughed softly, and the elders smiled with her.
"You can name him, sweetheart," she said. "You can name everything."
Emil thought about it.
He looked past her shoulder, at me.
"I want to ask Mama first," he said.
"Mama will say yes."
"Mama always says ask her first."
He leaned in and sniffed.
He sniffed again, wrinkling his nose, and pulled back an inch.
"You smell funny," he said.
The smile on Pia's face did not move.
"I'm wearing perfume, baby."
"No. It's soap." He frowned, very serious. "It's Mama's soap. The little green one in her drawer, that she doesn't let me touch. But it's wrong. It's the wrong kind of Mama."
The Hall went still.
Only I knew what he meant.
Six years ago I washed with the rite soap, a hard green bar of juniper that Hattie handed every mate.
I had kept the other half in a drawer ever since.
Emil had smelled it every night of his life.
He knew it better than he knew his own pillow.
"Elder," I said. My voice was steady, and I let the whole Hall hear it. "May I ask the Luna one question, at the veil?"
"You are not the Luna's equal."
"I'm the mother of the heir she asked to guard. The law lets the heir's mother ask a guardian one question before she takes the oath."
The elder with the braid looked at the old Alpha, who had followed us down the stairs at his own slow pace and now stood in the doorway on Bram's arm.
