Chapter 15: The Order in the Rubble

Piers's POV

My cheek burned for a long time after she left.

I let it.

I stood in the study and counted what I had done in the order I had done it.

I had smelled her in a square, and I had asked a name.

I had learned the name was Davenport, and I had said nothing.

Then I had taken her to my bed.

Every one of them was a choice, and I had made each one with my eyes open.

The captain of my guard came to the door.

"My King. She's through the gate. Do I send men?"

"One man," I said. "He stays a hundred yards behind her, and she never sees him."

"And you?"

"I'm going myself."

"Sire, the council."

"The council can wait on my wife."

It was the first time I had said it aloud, and she was not there to hear it.

I pulled up the floorboard under my bed and took out the one sheet of paper that lay in the drawer there.

It was my father's handwriting, and it was the reason I had kept my mouth shut for five years.

I put it inside my shirt.

I went down the hill on foot, in the dark, and I kept to the wall.

At the bottom of the drive the captain's man fell in beside me and spoke low.

"Strake's truck left his compound an hour ago, sire."

"Headed where?"

"North, then it went dark. We lost it."

"An hour ago is before she ever walked out."
