Chapter 16: The Offer
Macy's POV
Strake sat on the hood of his truck with his boots crossed, and his men stood around me in a ring.
There were eleven of them.
The headlamps threw my shadow out across the cannery yard.
"There she is," Strake said. "The girl who walks out on a king."
"Move your truck."
"I've been waiting for you since the council broke up."
"How did you know I'd come here?"
"Where else does a girl like you go when she's heartbroken? To the one place that never lied to her."
He slid off the hood and came toward me.
Under his arm was a thin gray folder tied with string.
"Do you know what this is?" he said.
I did not answer.
"It's your father's file. Five years of it. His license number. The names of the men who paid him. His own signature on a cellar plan for Stonegate Hall."
"Burn it, then."
"I'm not that sentimental."
He held it up in front of my face.
"I'll make you an offer, Davenport girl. The only one you'll get."
"I don't want it."
"Tomorrow morning you stand in front of the council. You tell them the King knew your father's name when he took you to bed and hid it for four days to make a Luna out of the Blaster's own blood."
"That's true," I said.
"I know. Isn't it lovely? You won't even have to lie."
"And?"
"And you give up his claim on you. You wipe his mark off your name in front of every Alpha."
"He hasn't marked me."
"Then it'll be easy to say."
"What do you get?"
"His crown." Strake smiled. "A king who hid the Blaster's daughter in his house cannot lead. The old wolves will make me regent by nightfall."
