Chapter 20: The Gala
The Border Trade dinner is held every year in the ballroom of the convention center, under chandeliers that cost more than my first truck.
At seven on Saturday night forty of my drivers walked through its brass doors in pressed shirts and borrowed jackets.
They came two by two, with their wives on their arms, and they filled the back tables of the room.
The greeter at the podium looked at the list, looked at me, and said, "Ms. Arriaga, Mr. Escamilla has you at the head table."
"Seat me with my people."
"Ma'am, he was very specific."
"So am I."
I wore the cream suit and the gold cross and my flat boots, which I had never once taken off for him.
My mother followed me in a navy dress, with her cane tapping and her reading glasses swinging on their cord.
Her beaded purse was heavy with dominoes.
"Whom do I watch?" she asked, under the music.
"The man in the third chair from the left at the head table. Grey hair, a medal on his lapel."
"The deputy director."
"The agent in tweed sat three seats from him, and the woman in the blue dress by the pillar is hers."
