Chapter 21: The Dinner
I climbed the steps to the podium with six hundred people watching my boots.
Escamilla held out his hand, warm and dry and smiling, and a photographer's flash went off.
I did not take it.
I took the microphone off its stand instead.
"Good evening," I said. "I won't be long. Mr. Escamilla is right that we are partners."
A polite laugh rolled through the room.
"For four years he has run cargo under my company's bond, and for four years I have paid his price."
The laugh thinned out.
Escamilla's hand slid to my elbow, very gently.
"My dear."
"Let go," I said, without turning my head.
He let go.
At the back of the ballroom the lights dimmed by half.
The technician at the sound desk was a driver's son, and he had been told to.
I plugged a cable into the podium, and the screen behind us flickered.
The cargo truck on the bridge vanished.
In its place stood a page of tiny handwriting, columns of dates and account numbers, blown up twelve feet tall.
