Chapter 13: Order Me
Zhiyao lay very still with her ear on his chest.
Her heart was going.
"Say that again," she said.
"You have no thread."
"I heard that part. I mean the part after."
"There was no part after."
"Then I'm going to ask the stupid question."
She propped her chin on his breastbone and looked up at him.
"If it isn't fate, what is it? Why do you want me?"
"I don't know."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only honest one."
His big hand moved up her spine and stopped between her shoulder blades.
"Every other time, I never had to ask."
"I only had to look at her and the wanting was already there, finished, like a roof on a house."
"And with me?"
"With you I have to build it. Every day. Every hour."
His thumb pressed a slow circle into her back.
"I build it out of your voice and your elbows and the way you swear at the ceiling when you can't sleep."
She laughed, and it came out wet.
"My elbows."
"They're very sharp."
"Wuyan."
"Erlang," he said. "When it's only us."
"Erlang."
She sat up, straddling his stomach, and looked down at him.
"I want to know what you want when nobody is writing it for you."
"So tonight you don't decide anything. I decide."
His eyes darkened.
"Order me," said the Emperor.
The words came out low.
"You want that?"
"I have given a command every day for three thousand years."
He swallowed.
"I would like very much to be told what to do by someone who won't be disappointed when I do it."
Heat went through her so fast it made her dizzy.
She slid off him and stood beside the bed.
"Get up. Kneel on the mattress, facing me."
He got up at once.
He knelt in the middle of the bed in his torn robe, big and bare-chested, his knees apart.
She walked around him slowly, once, with one finger trailing over his shoulder.
