Chapter 16: Amends
I walked into the Assembly at noon with no plan and a bleeding palm.
The hall was packed to the doors.
Hera sat on the queen's throne at the front, with the cup on a little table beside her.
She looked at my hands, and then at my face, and I could see her counting what I'd decided.
"Well?" she said.
"Not yet," I said.
"I have something else to hear first."
I turned around.
Alekos had come in behind me.
He wore plain grey wool, with no bracers and no sword.
He walked down the center aisle with a hitch in his step, and he did not look at me.
He stopped in the middle of the marble floor and knelt on it.
"I ask to be heard by the Assembly," he said.
"You have been the Champion for twenty-six centuries," Hera said.
"You do not need to ask."
"I do now."
The hall went quiet.
"I am going to say a thing that was forbidden," Alekos said.
"I am going to say all of it."
