Chapter 17: The Huntress
The goddess of the hunt found me before the uproar had finished.
She did not come through the crowd.
She stepped out of a column of shadow behind me, with a bow across her back and leaves in her braid.
"Walk with me," she said.
"I have a trial to prepare for."
"Your mother's trial is at dawn.
You have until then, and I have something the queen forgot to take from me."
Alekos moved to follow, and she looked at him.
"Not you.
Her."
"He comes," I said.
"He's useful."
The goddess studied him for a long moment.
"Then he carries the torch," she said.
We went down to the Maze at the edge of dusk.
The hedges parted for her.
She walked fast and didn't look at either of us, and her voice was low and bitter.
"My woods were never hers to curse," she said.
