Chapter 15: Just Take the Top One

Flynn's POV

I locked the print shop at midnight, and the brother was sitting on the hood of a rental car in my parking lot.

He had no jacket on.

His tie was in his pocket, and his expensive watch was turned face-in on his wrist.

"We're closed," I said.

"I know." Clayton Hartwell didn't get down. "I wanted to talk to the guy who talks to my sister."

"She doesn't want to see you."

"I'm not here for her."

I stayed where I was, with the keys in my fist, ten feet from him.

My father used to show up like this.

Late, hands open, a speech already warm in his mouth.

"Is this going to be a speech?" I asked.

Clayton almost laughed.

"God, I hope not. I'm bad at them." He rubbed his face. "My mother flew home this morning. She told me to stay and have Saskia at the airport by Friday. I've been sitting in a hotel bar all day, and the bartender asked if I was okay."

"Are you?"

"I grabbed my sister's arm in front of thirty people and told her she owed a dead man's daughter." He looked at me. "I said it like I was reading off a card."

He reached into his back pocket, took out his wallet, and slid a card out from behind his license.

It was thick and cream-colored, the size of a playing card.

He held it out, and I took it under the light over the shop door.

If your family were in a car accident and one person had to be sacrificed to save everyone else, who would you choose?

The handwriting was round and neat, with loops on every tall letter.

"That's Chloe's," Clayton said. "I carried the box in from her car that afternoon. Every card in the deck was printed. This one was on top, on different paper, and I thought, huh, she's made one of her own."
