Chapter 16: A Tab

Saskia's POV

Flynn put the card down on the professor's kitchen table at one in the morning, next to my cold tea.

He told me where it came from, and then he stood there with his hands in his pockets while I read it.

If your family were in a car accident and one person had to be sacrificed to save everyone else, who would you choose?

I knew the handwriting from nine years of birthday cards.

Every tall letter had a loop on it.

"She wrote it herself," I said.

"Clayton says it was on thicker paper than the rest of the deck."

"She wrote it so Mom would read it out loud, and I would sit there, and Dad would hand over the Cape house."

"Looks that way."

I turned the card over and found the little pencil arrow in the corner.

I laughed once, and it came out wrong.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I'm sorry my brother ambushed you in a parking lot at midnight, and I'm sorry you got pulled into my family. You didn't ask for any of it."

Flynn looked at me for a moment.

"That's a coffee," he said.

I blinked at him. "What?"

"House rule. First offense, you buy coffee." His voice was light, and his eyes were not. "Actually, with a family that size, you'd better start a tab. Or buy me the shop's espresso machine, and we'll call it even."

The words stung more than they should have.

"That's not funny."

"I'm not sure I was joking." He pulled out the chair across from me and sat. "You keep saying sorry for them, and they're not yours, Saskia. They're a mess you got handed at nine."
