Chapter 6: At the Gate

By sunrise, three hundred soldiers of the Sun Palace stood outside the Fire Palace gate with their spears grounded in the snow.

Lampos was hidden in the kitchens, and I had told him to stay there.

Phlegon stood at my side on the gatehouse steps with the northern court at our backs.

The regent had ordered every lord to come and see.

I was glad.

I wanted witnesses.

Aethon rode up to the gate on a white horse with his armor blazing gold.

Eous rode beside him.

Behind them came a litter with silk curtains, carried by four men.

"Helia," Aethon called. "Come down."

"I'm already here," I said.

"I mean come home." His voice rang across the courtyard. "You were tricked into this by a man who needed a wife who could warm his bed. Father will understand. We'll have the marriage set aside."

"By whom?"

"By the Council of Gods."

"The altar flame married us in front of two hundred of them," Phlegon said, mildly. "I would like to see that vote."

Aethon's jaw tightened.

"This isn't your quarrel, cripple."

The northern lords made a low sound along the wall.

Phlegon didn't move.

"I'm her husband," he said. "It is the only quarrel I have left."

Aethon looked at me again.

"Myrrha is in agony," he said. "The burns have gone to the bone and no healer in the palace can close them. Sun-fire wounds answer only to sun-blood. You are the only one who can."
