Chapter 7: The Crown

"I don't want it," I said.

Myrrha's smile didn't move.

"It's your crown, Helia. It was made for you. I only wore it because they made me."

"Then why is it mended?"

"I couldn't bear to see it broken."

She said it so gently that two of the northern lords looked at me as if I were being unkind.

Phlegon stepped past me.

He reached through the fire at the gate, and it parted for his arm.

He lifted the crown off the cushion.

For a moment he only held it, turning it in the light.

Then the color left his face.

I was close enough to see it happen.

His fingers tightened on the red-gold band until the knuckles went white, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Phlegon?"

"It's fine." He didn't look at me. "It's very fine work."

"We're leaving it as a gift," Aethon called. "Take it, if you've any manners. We camp at the foot of the valley, and we'll wait for the Fire God's answer on the matter of my sister's arms."

"You'll wait a long time," Phlegon said.

"We've time."

He turned his horse.

The Sun Palace soldiers followed, and the litter followed them, and Myrrha looked back once through the curtains, small and sorrowful in the white morning.

I took the crown from Phlegon's hand.
