Chapter 7: The Key
A sword-bearer stands one pace behind his lord's left shoulder, says nothing, and looks dangerous.
Si-hyeon was good at two of the three.
For two days he stood behind the black throne in the Red Lantern Hall, in a fresh black robe with a sword at his hip.
The cult watched him.
Petitioners brought the Demon grain disputes and river tolls and a goat.
The Demon settled each case in four sentences, with his chin on his fist.
Whenever he got tired of one, he reached back without looking and tapped two fingers on Si-hyeon's wrist.
That was how Si-hyeon learned he was bored.
By the second night Si-hyeon had learned something else.
The key to the main gate hung on a cord around the Demon's neck, under his robe, and the Demon took it off only to sleep.
Si-hyeon had a plan.
It was tidy, and he did not expect to enjoy it at all.
He waited until the lanterns burned low.
Then he walked to the bed, where the Demon lay on his back with an arm behind his head, reading a report by candlelight.
Si-hyeon took the report out of his hand.
"You're awake," the Demon said.
"I'm bored."
"Bored."
"I've been standing behind a chair for two days. I'd like to be put to use."
The Demon's eyebrow rose.
