Chapter 8: Armory

"Whose blood is this?" Si-hyeon said.

His voice was very quiet, and the sleeve shook in his fist.

The Heavenly Demon lay on his side in the dark with his eyes open.

He had been awake for some time.

"You went to the chest before the gate," he said.

"Answer me."

"Your sword is on the chair."

"I asked whose blood it is."

Si-hyeon had dressed in half a minute.

He wore the plain black sword the Demon had given him, with its red cord, and he held the sleeve in his left hand.

It was the cuff of an Azure Cloud disciple, and Si-hyeon had washed a thousand of those cuffs.

"I know that weave," he said. "It's ours. Whose is it? Who did you kill?"

"No one."

"There's old blood on it."

"There is."

"Then it's a trophy. You killed one of my brothers, you kept his sleeve, and you lay in that bed beside me and."

His voice broke, and he hated it.

"And I let you."

The Demon sat up.

For the first time, he looked tired.

"He lives," the Demon said. "He's alive and annoying, and I didn't kill him."

"Who?"

"Ask me later."

"Ask you later," Si-hyeon said. "You're a liar. The lord of liars."

"I didn't lie."

"You didn't tell the truth."

"That's different."

"It is not."

Si-hyeon drew the black sword, and the tip came up under the Demon's chin.

The Demon did not move.

He looked down the length of the blade at Si-hyeon, and Si-hyeon would have sworn he was trying not to smile.
