Chapter 10: The Ledger
Cesare's POV
I took the phone off the table and put it to my ear.
The nanny was crying so hard I could not understand her.
I made her say it again.
"Two men came to the school gate," she said. "They had a letter. It was signed by Mrs. Lombardi. They said she'd arranged it."
"Which men?"
"I don't know, sir. A gray car. They took him an hour ago."
I looked across the table at my sister.
She was standing with her hands folded in front of her, and she was not crying.
My sister had cried at every funeral since she was nine.
She was not crying now.
"Everyone out," I said.
Nobody moved.
"Out!"
The room emptied in thirty seconds.
The old man was the last to go, and he looked at Joanna on his way.
She did not go.
She stood by the table with her palm flat over her stomach, and I did not ask her to leave.
I had given up asking her for things.
"Where's your son, Bruna?"
"He's safe."
"Where is he?"
"He's being looked after."
"By who?"
She did not answer, and I knew.
I had known since the man in the navy coat said her name.
I had known, I think, since the clinic.
"You gave him to Orazio," I said.
"I lent him." Her voice was very calm. "A boy at Orazio's house is a boy no one will touch. Do you know how many times Father's enemies counted our family on their fingers? A child is the only insurance there is."
"You gave your own son to the man who tried to take my wife off the street."
