Chapter 11: The Pension Fund
I got to the door before Cesare caught up with me.
"You're not going," he said.
"Rule three."
"Rule three doesn't cover walking into a man's club who wants to keep you in a cellar."
"He wants the baby alive," I said. "He told his men not to touch my stomach. That's the only reason I'm still walking."
"Jo."
"A seven-year-old boy is eating ice cream in a room with that man. I'm not leaving him there for an hour while you plan."
"I'll go. I'll trade myself."
"He doesn't want you."
His mouth shut.
"I need the ledger," I said.
He stared at me.
"Pages from it. Copies. The payment columns."
"Why?"
"Because I spent eight months counting every dollar for a debt that wasn't real," I said, "and I know how men like Orazio hide money. Give me the pages and give me forty minutes. Then come in after me."
"If you don't come out in forty minutes, I come in with the whole family."
"If I'm not out in forty minutes, you'll be too late for it to matter. Come in at thirty."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he took the ledger out of his jacket and tore out four pages.
I folded them into my coat.
"I'm only agreeing," he said, "because you're right, and I hate that you're right."
I went in the front door of the Santangelo Social Club at ten past midnight.
It was a long room with red carpet, a bar, and twenty men at card tables.
They stopped playing when I walked in.
The man in the navy coat's friends were there, and one of them started to stand.
