Chapter 17: The Vault
Alaric went over the Temple wall at one in the morning.
He had not done anything so stupid since he was nineteen.
The wall was twelve feet of old grey stone.
He came down on the other side in a garden of dead roses with a hard thump and a pulled muscle in his thigh.
He stood very still and listened.
Nothing.
The Temple slept.
In his first life he had burned this building to its foundations.
He remembered every corridor of it, because he had walked them with a torch.
The knowledge was no use now.
He had to go by what he had seen on his one tour, as a guest, three weeks ago.
The archive lay under the sanctuary, down a spiral stair behind a locked door.
The lock took him four minutes with a pin from his sleeve.
Inside was a long low room of wooden shelves, scrolls and ledgers, and a smell of dust and beeswax.
