Chapter 18: The Carriage
They left the Emperor's spring tourney early, on the fifty-second day, in a closed carriage with the curtains half drawn.
The afternoon was bright and cold, and the streets of the capital were full.
Alaric sat across from her with the black book open on his knee, and he had not turned a page in ten minutes.
"You have to tell me what's wrong," Lysandra said.
"I told you at the inn that I would hide nothing," Alaric said.
"Yes," he said.
"I have not told you what I found in the Temple archive."
She sat up.
He closed the book.
"A seating chart for the Banquet," Alaric said. "In her hand. Your chair is struck out."
"My chair."
"And a note, with a number beside your name."
The carriage rattled over cobbles.
"A hundred," he said.
She felt the blood leave her hands.
"That isn't possible," she said.
"I know," he said.
"She can't know my score. Nobody does. The voice only speaks to me."
"Then she has her own." His voice was flat and tired. "Or she has been listening at the keyhole of whatever it is that talks to you."
Lysandra said nothing for a moment.
She thought of the kind blue eyes, and the white gown, and the milky sweetness of every word.
